Amy Carmichael: The Missionary Who Prayed for Blue Eyes
|
As a little girl growing up in Ireland, Amy Carmichael wanted blue eyes like her mother’s. Amy’s eyes were brown, but she had been taught that God hears and answers prayer, so when she was about three years old, she decided to ask Him to change them. She prayed for blue eyes and went to bed completely convinced that God would answer her. The next morning she woke up excited, pushed a chair over to the mirror, climbed up, and looked. Her eyes were still brown. Amy was crushed. She had been so certain that they would be blue that she could not understand why God had not done what she asked. Years later, Amy said she could still remember the bewilderment of that morning as though it had happened yesterday. Eventually she learned that God had answered her prayer, but His answer had been no.

Years later, Amy became a missionary and arrived in India in 1895. There she learned that young girls were being given to Hindu temples where they could be exploited. Amy wanted to find out what was happening to these children so she could help them, but foreigners were not allowed into some of the places she needed to investigate. An Irish missionary could not simply walk through the door and start asking questions. Amy sometimes disguised herself as an Indian woman, wearing Indian clothing and staining her exposed skin with coffee so she could enter places where a foreign woman would not have been admitted.

That is when the brown eyes she had once wanted so desperately to change became important. Amy could change her clothing and darken her skin, but she could not change the color of her eyes. If God had answered her childhood prayer with blue eyes, they could have exposed her as a European and ruined her disguise. One of the boys at Dohnavur, the mission Amy founded, later remarked, “I know why God gave Amma brown eyes.”

Amy eventually founded the Dohnavur Fellowship, which provided a home and protection for children, and she spent more than fifty years serving in India. The three-year-old girl crying because God had not given her blue eyes could never have known what God knew. Years later, she could look at those same brown eyes and understand why the answer she had wanted so badly would not have been the best answer.

There are times when we cannot understand why God does not answer a prayer the way we hoped. Amy Carmichael’s story reminds us that God sees much farther down the road than we do. What looks like a disappointing “No” today may make perfect sense when we someday see what God already knew.
