This Wednesday in Proverbs: God’s Handbook for His Image Bearers, Solomon gives us practical help. In Proverbs 6:12–19, he shows us how what is in a person’s heart becomes visible through the way they talk, act, and treat other people. We will learn how to recognize people who use their words and actions to deceive, manipulate, and create conflict, while also examining whether our own words and actions reflect the character of God.

This study will help us use biblical wisdom when deciding who we trust, who we allow to influence us, and what our own actions are revealing about us. Join us Wednesday at 2:00 PM or 7:00 PM, and invite someone to study Proverbs with you.

WHEN A MISSIONARY DUG FOR “RAIN”
|
|
When missionary John G. Paton arrived on the small Pacific island of Aniwa in the 1860s, one of the problems he faced was something very practical: fresh water. The island had no permanent stream or spring, so during dry periods the people depended heavily upon rain.
|
|
Paton decided to dig a well. That sounds ordinary to us, but the people of Aniwa thought the missionary had lost his mind. They understood that water fell from the sky. They had never seen fresh water come out of the ground. An old chief even warned Paton that if the people heard him talking about getting “rain” from beneath the earth, they might quit listening to everything else he told them.

He dug through dirt and coral until the well was about thirty feet deep. Even Paton was concerned. He believed there could be water below him, but because the island was surrounded by ocean, he feared that after all his work he might reach salt water.
|
|
Then water began filling the bottom of the hole. Paton tasted it.
|
|
He climbed out with a jug and gave some to the old chief. The chief examined it, tasted it, and excitedly declared that it really was “rain” coming from the earth. Soon the people helped Paton finish the well, and it became a source of water for the community. Paton later recorded that during a severe drought, an elder told him that without that well the people might have died.
|
|
There is a lesson here for every Christian. Paton saw a need and used what he knew to help meet it. He dug, worked, prayed, and served the people God had placed around him. His work gave people another reason to listen when he told them about the God he served.
|
|
Serving God often happens through ordinary opportunities. Helping someone, solving a problem, meeting a need, teaching a skill, providing a meal, or doing some difficult work for another person can demonstrate the love of Christ in a way they can see. We may never know which act of service God will use to open a door for us to speak into someone’s life.
