A few things on the calendar this week, plus an update on the Dowins Food Program.

Sunday School — 10:00 AM

Sunday School starts at 10:00 this Sunday.

Dowins Food Program — First Packing Day of the Year

This Sunday, after service, is our first packing day of the school year for the Dowins Food Program, providing weekend food for kids at risk of hunger. We're partnering with Southside Elementary, which needs 18 bags a week — a need we split with White Oak Church. First deliveries go out this Friday, and we'll pack again about once a month through the school year.
Here's some of what's behind this program:
  1. In 2024, 14.1 million children in the U.S. lived in households that experienced food insecurity.
  2. Nearly 1 in 5 children nationwide is affected by food insecurity, according to Feeding America.
  3. 18.4% of households with children were food insecure in 2024 — the highest rate in nearly a decade.
  4. School breakfast and lunch cover the week, but for a lot of families the gap opens Friday afternoon and doesn't close until Monday.
  5. Weekend backpack programs started with a single elementary school in Arkansas in 1995 and have since spread to communities across the country.
  6. A University of Illinois study found kids from food-insecure homes were more likely to actually show up to school on Fridays once they were part of a backpack program.
  7. Other research has linked weekend backpack programs to improved reading scores, with some evidence of gains in math too.
  8. Surveys of backpack programs consistently show high satisfaction among students, parents, and teachers.
  9. Kids facing food insecurity are more likely to struggle with focus and energy in the classroom.
  10. Roughly 1 in 3 single-mom households experienced food insecurity in recent years — a reminder of the families behind every bag we pack.
You can be part of this through financial giving, prayer, and joining us to pack bags on packing days.

Living Letters — Chapter 4: Church Life

This week's lesson looks at your place in the body of Christ. We'll walk through Acts 2 and how the early believers devoted themselves to the Word, fellowship, and prayer, and we'll talk about how God has placed each of us in this church on purpose — with something specific to contribute. You'll also be reminded that the people who shaped your faith are part of your legacy, and you have the same chance to shape someone else's.

This Sunday's Sermon: Help My Unbelief

Praying Beyond Our Limits — August 23, 2026
We're continuing our month of prayer, and this week lands on the place a lot of us end up: praying for something so long we're tempted to quit. Pastor will walk through the persistent widow in Luke 18, the friend who won't stop knocking at midnight in Luke 11, and the father in Mark 9 who brought his suffering son to Jesus and prayed, "Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief." We'll also meet the woman in Mark 5 who carried twelve years of disappointment straight to Jesus and found His power hadn't changed.
If you've got something in that prayer bowl you're still waiting on, this one's for you.

SLBC Mission Statement

A mission statement puts into words why an organization exists and keeps that purpose before its people. Ours reminds us why we exist as a church: “We exist to be voices for God’s Word and hands for God’s work.” We are to proclaim His Word faithfully and put it into practice through loving service. This is more than a statement—it …
