THE STORY BEHIND “HOW GREAT THOU ART”
While missionary Stuart Hine and his wife were serving in Eastern Europe, they traveled through the Carpathian Mountains sharing the Gospel. During one of those journeys, a violent thunderstorm swept through the mountains. After the storm passed, Hine was struck by the beauty around him and the birds beginning to sing again. Those experiences helped shape the familiar words of “How Great Thou Art” about the stars, the thunder, the woods, and the beauty of God’s creation.

Later, Hine approached a home in a Ukrainian village where Christians had gathered. Inside, people were reading about the crucifixion of Jesus, repenting of their sins, and praying. Hine stood outside listening as people responded to the Gospel. That experience helped shape his words about the Son of God willingly dying to take away our sin.
|
Hine saw God’s greatness in the mountains, heard it in the thunder, and witnessed it as the Gospel changed people’s lives. Nearly a century later, Christians are still singing about the greatness of the God Hine was serving.
