Welcome to this week’s SLBC Midweek Newsletter!

We hope your week is going well. As we approach Memorial Day weekend, many families begin making plans for cookouts, travel, and gatherings with friends and loved ones. Memorial Day has become an important part of American life, but it is also a time to slow down and remember why this holiday exists.

Memorial Day began after the Civil War as communities gathered to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. Over time, it became a national day of remembrance for Americans who gave their lives while serving in the United States military.

More than 1 million American service members have died in military service throughout our nation’s history. Behind every number is a family, a story, and a sacrifice that affected generations of people. Memorial Day reminds us that many freedoms we enjoy today came at a very high cost.

As Christians, Memorial Day also reminds us of the importance of gratitude. Scripture teaches us to honor faithful service, remember sacrifice, and appreciate the blessings God has allowed us to enjoy. It is also a reminder that the greatest act of sacrifice was seen in Jesus Christ, who willingly gave His life so sinners could be forgiven and reconciled to God.

Here are a few meaningful ways families can observe Memorial Day this year:

• Visit a local memorial or cemetery and take time to reflect and pray
• Thank a veteran or military family for their service and sacrifice
• Teach children why Memorial Day exists and what it represents
• Spend time together thanking God for the freedoms and opportunities we enjoy
• Pray for military families, first responders, and national leaders

This Saturday’s newsletter will include additional Memorial Day thoughts and encouragement as we approach the holiday weekend.

We hope to see you this Wednesday for Bible Study!
